Reserving your Abyssinian kitten

If you're looking for an Abyssinian kitten in South Africa or beyond, you’ll quickly discover that they’re in high demand — and incredibly rare. These ancient, intelligent cats are adored for their beauty and personality, but with only a handful of breeders in the country, it’s essential to plan ahead.

At Atlantic Abyssinians & Somalis, our kittens are not mass produced. Each kitten is carefully raised, and our litters are usually fully booked months before they are born

Why Abyssinian Kittens Are So Rare in South Africa

Our breeding queens typically have 1 or 2 litters per year, with only 3 to 4 kittens per litter. We focus on quality over quantity, producing kittens with excellent health, calm temperaments, and rare colour variations — including blue and fawn Abyssinians, which are seldom seen in South Africa or abroad.

If you're hoping to bring home an Abyssinian kitten in South Africa, it's especially important to join our waitlist early, as they are often reserved months and sometimes years in advance.

Tchai: Best Abyssinian in South Africa

Our stud male, Tchai, holds the ranking of Best Abyssinian in South Africa 2025 and is the highest-ranked cats in the Western Cape. His kittens are known for their:

  • Show-worthy coat texture and ticking

  • Balanced personalities

  • Clear eyes and elegant, athletic build

We also breed Somali kittens, the stunning long-haired relatives of the Abyssinian, with equally rare colour lines and gentle natures.

Our Booking Process

We do things a little differently — and responsibly:

  • The first step is to contact us and register your interest, and then join the waiting list.

  • We keep everyone on our waiting list updated about the litters, when they will be born, possible colours etc.

  • Once the kittens are born we re-check with everyone on the waiting list who is still interested (sometimes peoples situations change and maybe the time when the kittens is born is not the right time for you to get a kitten.)

  • We wait until the kittens are 6 weeks old, at which point we evaluate their health, personality, and development.

  • Once we are sure each kitten is thriving, we contact our waitlist at 6 weeks in order of to offer them the available kittens. We discuss which kitten would best for their new family. We try our utmost best to help you get your dream kitten. Sometimes it can take patience but it is worth the wait.

  • Kittens are reserved by paying a non refundable deposit. The balance is due before delivery of the kitten.

  • Delivery of the kitten is also at the cost of the buyer. We work with animal travel agencies to help you get the safest and most cost effective method of delivery. (Options include local delivery, air travel via cargo, air travel with a pet nanny in the cabin, air travel with you fetching the kitten yourself, etc).

This process ensures we are sending healthy, well-adjusted kittens to homes where they will thrive. It also allows us to match each kitten to the right home — whether a show prospect or a much-loved pet.

We Deliver Across South Africa & Internationally

Whether you're based in Cape TownJohannesburg, or abroad in LondonAmsterdam, or New York, we can help you bring your Abyssinian kitten home.

We work with experienced pet relocation agents to handle:

  • All export documents and vaccinations

  • Rabies blood tests (if required by your country)

  • Comfortable, airline-approved travel arrangements

For countries like the UK or EU, there is often a 3-month waiting period after the rabies antibody test. This means the kitten may only travel at 5–6 months of age. We care for the kitten during this time and keep you updated.

When to Join the Waitlist

Because demand is so high, we recommend that you join our waitlist at least 3–6 months in advance. This gives you:

  • Early access to upcoming litters

  • First choice when kittens are released at 6 weeks

  • Time to prepare for import requirements if you live overseas
